A Minute of the Third Act Break up

A minute on The Third Act Break Up. A beloved literary device or a plot-destroying menace? If you read Romance books then you will have come across the Third Act break-up at least once, probably much more than once. Does it work? Does it enhance the story or drag you out kicking and screaming? I am not a fan and think little and often is the way to go. What do you think?
